Weekend of Words: Inside A Cozy Book Retreat

There’s something magical about stepping away from the noise of everyday life and sinking into stories — both the ones we read and the ones we write. I recently went on a book retreat with a group of friends and it was everything a I could dream of: reading, crafting, bookstore adventures, chatting, and even a little writing time for me as I dove back into editing my story.

The Reading Escape

Between laughter, snacks, and cozy reading nooks, we actually made time to read — uninterrupted. Everyone brought something different — fantasy, romance, mysteries — and it was so peaceful to just… read together. No pressure, no deadlines. Just the soft hum of pages turning and the occasional “You have to read this part!” or “I like this line.” or “What were they thinking?”

Ink Magic

In between reading and craft sessions, I and another writer carved out some time to edit our stories. Being surrounded by people who love stories as much as you do — it reminded me of why I write in the first place. Now, did I get much editing done? No, but I talked through parts of the areas I was struggling with, and got to have a deep conversation regarding books and editing and more with my friend. It was amazing.

Bookstore Adventures

What’s a book retreat without a bookstore run? We went to McKay’s, which is a local discounted bookshop, and let’s just say shelf-control went out the window for some of us (no regrets). We also picked up a book for the book swap planned during the trip. The thrill of finding a hidden gem and seeing everyone’s book stacks grow taller was half the fun! We didn’t need the books, but we definitely wanted them!

Crafting Memories

When we weren’t reading or book shopping, I brought all the crafts to do – from beads to make bookish keychains and bracelets, to my Silhouette Cameo and Heat Press to make a bookish t-shirts, and even things to make tiny books to go into an ornament. I definitely made keychains and bracelets inspired by my favorite reads. There’s just something magical about creating a tangible item that connects you to a story.

The Book Swap

One of the items I wanted to do with everyone was book swap – or really a “White Elephant” game. We all picked out a book at McKay’s to add to the pile and drew numbers so everyone left with something new to read. I happened to end up with the funniest one that was randomly picked up … or maybe just say the “smuttiest” one. To be honest, this one may sneak into a Christmas gift of someone I know.

What Stayed With Me

This retreat reminded me how magical it is to be surrounded by readers, creators, and dreamers. I came home with new books, handmade treasures, a refreshed mind — and a few more pages edited. Between the swapping, laughter, and heartfelt conversations about books (and life), it truly felt like the best kind of reset. Here’s to more weekends spent surrounded by books, creativity, and friends that fill both hearts…. and my notebooks.

Happy reading… and editing!
