About the Monthly Reading Prompts:

Each monthly prompt highlights a different aspect of Deaf and hard-of-hearing representation across genres, age groups, and lived experiences. From sign language–centered stories and genre fiction to OwnVoices works and non-fiction, the challenge encourages readers to explore the diversity and richness of Deaf storytelling throughout the year.

Together, the prompts celebrate Deaf creativity, community, and visibility while supporting both established and emerging voices.

  • ASL on Page – a book that includes American sign language
  • D/HH Romance – a love story featuring D/HH characters
  • Fantasy or Sci-Fi – speculative fiction with D/HH characters
  • Middle Grade – D/HH representation in MG fiction
  • Young Adult – D/HH representation for YA fiction
  • Indie Author/Self-Published – an indie voice featuring D/HH characters
  • Deaf-Blind Character – Features a character or writer that is deaf-blind
  • Graphic Novel or Comic – visual storytelling with D/HH representation
  • Deaf Culture & Community – story exploring Deaf identity or history
  • OwnVoices Author – written by a Deaf/HoH author
  • Other Sign Language – book features a sign language other than ASL
  • Non-Fiction or Poetry – written by or about Deaf/HoH experiences
